FDA bio-terrorist policies for food may extend to pharmaceutical supply chain

The proposed requirements outlined in a recent progress report to the secretary of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which currently covers food being imported into the USA, could soon be extended to cover the pharmaceutical imports for the country.

The FDA has recently released proposals which cover the importation of food into the USA, in relation to the prevention of this sector being used to inflict a bio-terrorist attack on the country. There is concern that these proposed regulations may then be extended to the pharmaceutical market, adding time and costs to the pharma supply chain. Mick Scholefield, Managing Director of Pharmafreight, commented: “We have been advised unofficially by the FDA that there will be a regulation to follow which will encompass pharmaceuticals. The question is when and how. In any event, I am sure that it will probably mirror the one which is intended for food. This means that companies may have to register with the FDA and give further information to them, as well as giving them prior notice of the goods which you are sending. “
